Subject: Buildings

Description: As an early part of the college curriculum and to help pay for their board, students participated in manual labor. Besides the typical daily chores required on a farm or homestead, students spent a majority of their labor clearing trees and chopping firewood for the furnaces. When the use of coal replaced wood as the main heating source, students were still expected to participate in the dirty difficult chore of feeding coal into the boilers. In this photograph a man, most likely a student feeds coal into the boilers at the "Old Engine House" in 1890.
