Description: Forest Akers donated money to MSU to establish awards and scholarships for students, particularly athletes. Akers set up the Chester L. Brewer award, named in honor of his baseball coach at M.A.C., in 1950. It was given annually to an exemplary senior athlete. In 1947, the Forest Akers Scholarship was created for caddies or the sons of employees of the Detroit Golf Club. Recipients were required to live in campus dorms for the first two years at MSU and were prohibited from drinking alcohol or smoking tobacco. Additionally, Akers gave money to students who encountered unexpected financial setbacks. This money could be repaid, if the student desired.
